🌳 Making Forests with Sycal: Planting Trees to Reduce Environmental Impact 🌍

At Sycal, we are always on the lookout for new and innovative ways to help lower our environmental impact. From small in-house alterations to giant supply chain changes, we’re dedicated to sourcing promotional merchandise in a more environmentally conscious manner.

In late 2021, we partnered with Ecologi, an environment focussed organisation that is combatting the climate crisis by funding green projects and planting trees across the globe.

Whenever an order is placed at Sycal valued over £750, we fund the planting of 25 trees via Ecologi. Now, we have tens of thousands of trees planted in forests across Senegal, Mozambique, Madagascar, Kenya, Nicaragua, Ethiopia, Morroco, and Tanzania.

Our tree planting program is part of its broader commitment to sustainability. These tree purchases also offers economic benefits to the local communities involved in the planting. Local people are hired to plant and maintain the trees, creating jobs and boosting their economy.

Every month, we offset the CO2eq created by our staff by investing in Ecologi projects. As of time of writing, we have avoided 106.6 tonnes of CO2eq, as accredited by Gold Standard, Verified Carbon Standard, and the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards.

Some of the projects funded include:

• Turning organic waste into electricity in India – The India Organic Waste Management Programme utilises organic waste to turn it into biogas, replacing the fossil fuels and firewood used for cooking and heating purposes and electricity generated by the burning of fossil fuels or sourced from the grid. The project also avoids methane emissions due to improper disposal of waste dumped at dumpsites and landfills. Besides significant annual emission avoidance up to 70,000 tCO₂e, between 2016 and 2020 the project activity supported 73 local jobs.

• Peatland restoration and conservation in Indonesia – These unique habitats store massive amounts of carbon, with stocks below ground amounting to up to 20 times the amount stored in trees and vegetation. Despite covering just 3% of the Earth’s surface, they store more carbon than all other vegetation types in the world combined. 

• Wind power projects in Mexico – This project will prevent the emissions of 245,015 tonnes of CO2e on average every year that it is operational, which will be for at least 20 years.

• Protection of the Matavén forest in eastern Colombia – The Matavén REDD+ project protects 1,150,212 hectares of tropical forest in the Indigenous Reservation of the Matavén Forest. Over the past decade, this project has succeeded in preventing emissions which, in the absence of the project activity, would have taken place.
