This year marks the 28th anniversary of Employee Appreciation Day, a day dedicated to recognising the hard work and tireless efforts of your workforce and rewarding it in turn.

Last year, research from Wildgoose looked into employee recognition in the UK. Of the 133 different UK companies surveyed, over 72% of interviewed employees believed that they deserved more recognition from their employer. Further research found that the less-recognised employees are 131% more likely to lose faith in their management and the company’s core values, and twice as likely to become less productive.

Less-recognised staff are more likely to have their mental health impacted, as well as more likely to be looking for employment elsewhere.

It’s easy to attribute this impact to salaries, especially with a cost-of-living crisis prominent in the UK, however, studies have shown that these feelings reflect the sense of value and respect an employee feels from their employer. This notion isn’t radical; in 2018, recruitment firm Monster.co.uk found that 40% of surveyed bosses and managers acknowledged that there isn’t enough praise given in their workplace.

In short, appreciation isn’t always free… but under-appreciation can cost you dearly.
